Stuffed animals — teddy bears and bunnies and Minions — aren't like usa: They cannot breast-stroke away drool and expressionless skin and snot. But your child's beloved carry needs an occasional soak and scrub, too!

Washing a stuffed animal is easy. But some plush toys are older, or more fragile, than others. Mitt-laundering will be the right pick for those well-worn toys, while machine-washing is fine for nigh stuffed animals. Here we'll cover the best practices for both approaches, too as tips for cleaning toys that cannot exist submerged in water, such as dolls with electronic components.

But first, some unwelcome news, perhaps: Stuffed animals, along with bedsheets and towels, are high on the listing of items that should be washed after your child has been sick. Otherwise, wait to requite Winnie the Pooh a washup simply when he appears visibly dirty or no longer passes the smell test.

Stuffed toys like teddy bears or bunnies tin exist machine washed, which will be the easiest option for most parents. However, you run the risk of damaging some toys by throwing them in with the launder, particularly when it comes to cleaning well-loved (and well-worn) blimp animals. Be sure to look for the manufacturer's washing instructions past checking the care tag when deciding if machine washing is the best option: You lot wouldn't want to mangle Mr. Buttons. If you choose the machine-washing road, here'southward where to starting time:

  • Use the gentle cycle and cold h2o, though if a child has been sick and the toy can tolerate information technology (for example, it does non have glued-in parts), warm or hot water can be used.

  • A balmy detergent, like a free and articulate formula or Woolite, is ideal, merely regular detergent is fine — no need to purchase a divide detergent for washing stuffed animals. Follow the instructions on the bottle and don't apply too much detergent, as soap rest left backside tin irritate sensitive skin.

  • If the size and shape of the blimp creature allows for information technology, put the toy in a mesh washing bag to help protect parts like eyes and hair. You can as well pad the load with towels to help protect toys.

Motorcar drying is O.1000. for some toys, though information technology's not ever the best option because many plush toys have glued-in or plastic parts that might not survive the high heat of a dryer. If you practise cull to machine dry a blimp animate being, use the no- or low-heat setting. A meliorate pick, though, is to air dry plush toys, because fur can get burned in a hot dryer; identify the toy near a fan or a dehumidifier to speed up drying time and ensure that the inner stuffing doesn't retain h2o. If the toy appears matted after its bath, using a pilus dryer on depression or medium estrus tin assistance restore a furry friend's fluffiness.

Non all stuffed animals are created equally, so when it comes to an especially dear Teddy or Bunny or Squirrely, mitt-washing is the amend way to go. Do not be daunted! If y'all tin can launder a child, you lot can wash a blimp animal (blimp animals are easier … less squirmy).

To launder a stuffed animal or doll by mitt, you lot demand three things:

  • A make clean space that can hold plenty water to fully submerge the toy, like a kitchen or utility sink, or a large bucket.

  • A mild detergent. Wirecutter, a New York Times company that reviews and recommends products, likes Soak, which is a no-rinse formula, for hand-washing.

  • A clean, dry towel.

Starting time by filling the sink, or whatever space you're using, with enough common cold or warm water to fully submerge the blimp animal, then add a teaspoon to a tablespoon of detergent per gallon of h2o. Submerge the toy and use a pumping motion — every bit if y'all were performing C.P.R. on Teddy — so that it's saturated with water and detergent. Allow the toy to soak in that solution for xv minutes, or upwardly to an hour, before rinsing; more delicate toys should soak for less time to avoid damaging their fibers. When it's time to rinse, y'all can either hold the toy under absurd running h2o or drain and refill the sink with clean water, repeating the pumping motion to get rid of soap residue. The latter method is more gentle and will be best for especially tattered toys. Regardless of the state of the stuffed brute, it's recommended that yous not scrub vigorously or wring it out: Overhandling tin lead to damage.

To dry a plush toy afterwards hand-washing it, drain the sink and printing downwards gently on the stuffed fauna several times to push button out as much water as y'all can, so curl information technology upward in a clean dry towel, which volition pull out more water. Allow the toy to air dry out, using the lowest estrus setting on a hair dryer to fluff upwards the fauna if needed. A slicker castor, similar those used to castor out dogs and cats, can also be pressed into service to groom Teddy'southward fur.

If a toy is especially grimy, or has a stain, you tin can besides include a laundry booster, such as OxiClean (for grime), or apply a pretreatment product like Zout (for protein stains such every bit blood or vomit) to the toy prior to washing. However, before using any kind of stain treatment, it'due south important to spot test information technology start, co-ordinate to Beth Karpas, the owner of Realms of Aureate, a doll hospital in Los Altos, Calif. "The fur can react to chemicals, and unlike furs react to different chemicals differently," she warned. "Sometimes the fur shrinks or changes color, and you lot can't reverse that."

Spot treating is the method of choice to clean toys that cannot be submerged because they take electronic or musical components. Spot treating involves doing a surface-only cleaning of the toy, by wiping its exterior using a damp cloth and a mild lather. Karpas recommends using a foaming paw or dish soap. "Information technology's less dense, and less concentrated so it takes less try and less moisture to remove a tiny fleck of foaming soap than it does a tiny bit of regular soap," she said, "The point is to effort to avoid soaking that inner stuffing."

There are, of course, times when a professional person is chosen for. Should y'all find yourself in need of a trained doll surgeon, the Doll Doctor'due south Association offers a doll hospital locator on its website.
